Rainy days

dancing in the rain is cliche, really
the kind of thing movies like the notebook are probably about

two people with some kind of connection
lovers
best friends
good girls and bad boys
find themselves playing in puddles
kicking up the waterfallen sky
running in circles, laughing

and without warning
the serious moment arrives
the one novelists write about
plumping up the scene with sparks, magic, electricity

the barefoot good girl spins toward
the bad boy with celebrity blue eyes
and knows without knowing
this boy with whom she shares a bed but no romance
wants to kiss her

perhaps like the breeze of butterfly wings changing the world
leaning in for that silver screen kiss would've altered the path of the universe

perhaps not
probably not

somehow it's better
the not knowing

instead of awkward or afters
what ifs or what was that
the memories that linger
are laughter
a long skirt
a shared towel
and an energy that rolled through
like the low rumble of thunder
